Fascias, Soffits & Guttering… What do you need to know?

Fascias & Soffits

Fascias Soffits Guttering

What are Fascias, Soffits and Guttering (FSG)?

Depending on how much effort you have put into maintenance over the years, you may know them as the “bit of the roof that makes the house look pretty” or on the other hand, “the bit of the roof that makes the house look shabby”. They’re traditionally constructed from materials such as aluminium or wood, however now it seems best to choose composite materials such as uPVC. Take a look at the image below to get your head around exactly which bit belongs where:

Why do these parts play an important role for your roofline?

Fascias, soffits and bargeboards are some of the most important external features of any property. The boards, when fitted by professionals, act as a first line of defence to wind, rain, snow and extreme weather, helping to keep your home warm and dry. This means that, they’re protecting your rafters from structural damages that could be caused if they were left exposed. Without these boards, it would be extremely easy for any form of moisture to come in, possibly causing serious condensation and damp issues. One of the biggest problems with issues such as these is that they could go unnoticed for a long period of time before they’re discovered, and end up costing a lot more money.

As for your guttering, these also play a vital role in collecting rainwater from the roof of your property and directing it away from the roof edge into appropriate drainage grounds. Leaks or blockages can often occur in old and poorly looked after guttering which can lead to major problems for your property, such as damp walls and ceiling as well as damage windows and doors.

How do I maintain my roofline?

Gutters will have to be cleared from moss, leaves and general debris regularly to keep the water flowing efficiently. It’s a task that is often overlooked in a lot of households, but one that is very important. To keep it from becoming too much of a problem, there is a product on the market called a “Hedgehog” Gutter Guard. No, we’re not asking you to fill your gutters with little spiky creatures. As pictured below, you can see the Hedgehog sits perfectly in your guttering system, stopping any leaves/debris from causing a blockage. We can supply these with all of our FSG works, just contact us for more information. Lastly, check there are no cracks in the gutter by pouring water through the system and keeping an eye out for any leaks. If there are a few cracks it may be time to have them repaired or replaced.

Fascia and soffit boards are a bit trickier than just giving them a good clean, particularly if they’re wooden like on most properties. It involves the time-consuming process or removing all of the old paint and protection oils you may have used, sanding those down and then re-treating them. Like I said, it’s a lengthy task, and not one you want to spend doing on your Sunday afternoon.

When is it time to replace my Fascias, Soffits and Guttering?

Over a period of time, wooden fascia and soffit boards are extremely prone to rotting and flaking if not maintained properly. Do you have the time to regularly pay your roof a visit for maintenance? Do you enjoy the process of removing paint, sanding, preserving, priming, then a bit more sanding and painting? If you do, we salute you! However most of us, firstly don’t enjoy it, and secondly don’t have the time to do it! This leads to problems such as the ones mentioned earlier. So what’s the solution? uPVC, of course.

For both reducing maintenance, and prolonging their effectiveness and lifespan, uPVC seems to be the perfect material for fascias and soffit boards, as well as your guttering and downpipes. Aside from the practical solutions, there are also aesthetics to appreciate. With the sleek lines and moulded features that we have to offer from our products, you’ll be sure to find a style to really enhance the appearance of your home.

A property with striking kerb appeal, protection and a low maintenance roofline… Seems an easy decision to make, don’t you think?
